In May 2021, as part of Myeloma Awareness Month, we launched the 38mate Awareness Initiative. It was designed to raise awareness about myeloma and show support and solidarity for those living with myeloma. Even now, the 38mate message is still being heard across the country and the globe, reaching nearly 100,000 people to date. From this, 3.8 with a mate, our first national fundraising awareness walk was born.

In 2024 is it estimated that 50 Australians will be diagnosed with myeloma which means now more than ever we need to raise awareness and funds to increase research and support for the 22,000 Australians currently living with myeloma.

In 2024 Myeloma Australia ambassador and much loved national icon, Sandy Roberts made myeloma his Greatest Call. To complement this, we have renamed 3.8 With a Mate to My Greatest Walk.

How can you get involved in 38mate?

38 people per week – hear their stories, share their stories

38 people being diagnosed with myeloma per week is not just a number. It is 38 lives and families. Throughout May, we’re releasing a series of short videos that tell the stories of people who are living with myeloma, caring for a loved one with myeloma, or who have lost a loved one to myeloma. The videos will be shared via our social media platforms, so be sure to follow along. Help us by sharing the videos to your own networks.

Here are some of our courageous 38mates who have chosen to share their stories to help raise awareness about myeloma.
