Facing the elephant in the room – preparing for end of life

This seminar explores end-of-life care in myeloma, focusing on palliative care, decision-making, and how patients and families can be supported through later stages of the disease.

Haematologist Ian Irving outlines the myeloma journey over time, explaining how treatment goals change and why palliative care can play an important supportive role alongside active treatment. He discusses quality of life, symptom management, and navigating complex decisions as the disease progresses.

Palliative care nurse consultant Kay Hodes explains what palliative care involves, addressing common misconceptions and describing how symptoms are managed and how patients and families are supported emotionally and practically.

Senior research fellow Christina Thomas introduces the CarerHelp website, an evidence-based resource designed to support carers of people approaching end of life.

The session concludes with lived-experience advocate Carrie Gibson, who shares personal reflections on advance care planning, uncertainty, and living meaningfully with myeloma.
