Your immune system- Supporting immune function

Haematologist Kylie Chimes explores infection risk in multiple myeloma, with a focus on how the disease and its treatments affect the immune system and what can be done to reduce infections.

This session explains why people with myeloma are immunocompromised, outlines common strategies used in clinical practice to lower infection risk—including vaccinations, antibiotics, and immunoglobulin (Ig) replacement—and examines how Ig therapy is currently used across Australia and internationally. Dr Chimes also discusses the evidence behind Ig replacement, highlights gaps in current research, and provides an overview of ongoing clinical trials aiming to improve guidance on when and how Ig should be used in supportive care.
