In this webinar, Dr Hannah Ward, early career researcher and leader of the Supportive Oncology Research Group, explores the role of the gut microbiome in multiple myeloma and how cancer treatments can significantly impact gut health.
Dr Ward explains how myeloma therapies damage the lining and nerve function of the gastrointestinal tract, leading to symptoms such as diarrhoea, constipation, bloating, malnutrition, and increased infection risk. She discusses how treatment-related changes to the gut microbiome (dysbiosis) are linked to poorer outcomes, including longer hospital stays and higher infection rates. The session also explores emerging strategies to support gut health, including prebiotics, probiotics, faecal microbiota transplantation, and novel approaches that protect the gut lining, alongside important safety considerations for immunocompromised patients.
