Supportive care and shared decision making

In this practical, patient-focused webinar, Dr Donna Kademero, Nurse Practitioner in the Multiple Myeloma Program at Mount Sinai Hospital (New York), explores supportive care, symptom management, and emerging therapies in multiple myeloma.

Dr Kademero walks through common myeloma-related complications including bone disease, pain, kidney impairment, anemia, infection risk, and neuropathy, and explains how both the disease and its treatments contribute to symptoms. She discusses side effects across major drug classes—IMiDs, proteasome inhibitors, monoclonal antibodies, and newer agents—and shares practical strategies nurses and patients use to manage them in real-world care.

The session also introduces CAR T-cell therapy and bispecific antibodies, explaining how they work, what side effects to expect (CRS, neurotoxicity, infection risk), and why caregiver support and prevention strategies are essential. Dr Kademero concludes by emphasising patient engagement, shared decision-making, and healthy lifestyle choices to improve outcomes and quality of life.
