Using diet as medicine

In this webinar, Associate Professor Nicole Kiss, advanced practising dietitian and cancer nutrition researcher, discusses how diet can be used as medicine during multiple myeloma treatment and recovery.

Nicole explains the causes and consequences of malnutrition and muscle loss during cancer treatment, highlighting why these issues can occur in people of any body size. She outlines how increased energy and protein needs, treatment side effects, and reduced physical activity contribute to nutritional decline, and why early identification and intervention are critical. The session provides practical, evidence-based strategies to optimise energy and protein intake, manage common symptoms such as nausea, mouth ulcers, taste changes and diarrhoea, and support muscle health through nutrition and physical activity. Special considerations during stem cell transplant, food safety, and the role of supplements are also discussed.
