Young and strong – thriving with myeloma

This national seminar is designed to empower younger people living with myeloma, addressing the unique medical, emotional, relationship, and financial challenges faced earlier in life.

Specialist myeloma nurses Kath Bolley and Narell Smith host this session, themed Young and Strong: Thriving with Myeloma. The seminar brings together expert perspectives across treatment, long-term side effects, finances, and relationships.

Consultant haematologist Dr. Hib Sadiki explains the late effects and toxicities of myeloma treatments, including stem cell transplant, immunotherapy, and long-term maintenance therapy. He discusses immune recovery, infection risk, secondary cancers, fertility and sexual health, neuropathy, bone disease, cardiovascular health, steroid side effects, and the importance of a holistic care approach focused on quality of life.

Financial adviser Nicola Bezwick answers common questions about financial security when diagnosed young, covering cash-flow management, government support, insurance (including cover held within superannuation), accessing super on compassionate or incapacity grounds, and practical planning during periods away from work.

Clinical psychologist Dr. Veronica Johnston explores adapting to changing relationships while living with chronic illness. Her session focuses on identity changes, grief and loss, communication within relationships, emotional regulation, navigating shifts in roles, and talking to children about illness in age-appropriate and supportive ways.

Together, this seminar offers practical guidance, reassurance, and evidence-based strategies to help younger people with myeloma—and those who support them—live well, plan ahead, and feel less alone.
